Temerate House, Kew Gardens
Project Overview
Temerate House, Kew Gardens
Opened in May 1863, Temperate House is a Grade I listed showhouse located within Kew Botanical Gardens.
Known for housing some of the largest plants in the collection, the Temperate House stands out with its impressive rectangular design and pitched roofs. Its structure features steel frames combined with glazed roof panels and timber-framed windows, creating a light and airy environment ideal for diverse plant species.
Doug Phillips executed a careful refurbishment package, focused on restoring all timber windows and repairing or replacing the existing glazing.
Given the building’s heritage status, every step of the renovation strictly followed the conservation management plan and guidelines from English Heritage. The result is a spectacular restoration that preserves the Temperate House’s historic charm while ensuring it continues to thrive as a beautiful botanical showcase.
